Today we visited a school to make a classroom observation. It was a Spanish lesson with german students so it was kind of hard for me to understand what they said. Otherwise, I could focus on the bodylanguage, interaction, how she organised the classroom and how she included students in the discussions.
First of all, I understood much more Spanish than I thought I would do, it was so fun!!!
For me, it wasn’t that inspiring to see how she taught the language because it was exactly the same as my teachers had always done. She gave them a text, they discussed about it, they listened to it and answered some questions.
What was interesting was that they didn’t use digital tools like I have always done. The teacher used a cd-player, textbooks and the blackboard.
I got really shocked when I saw blackboards in the classrooms here, which is a very old tool for me. I didn’t even have it during my school period.
It is really sad that they are not using videos, pictures and internet when learning about Argentina, for example. I saw how some students didn’t understand everything and I am guessing that a video or the opportunity of searching for more information on the internet would have improved the lesson and the learning process. Using digital tools/mobile technologies is like the standard in Sweden and I feel really privileged of getting so many different digital tools in my education. That privileged makes me even more motivated to learn as much as possible to spread the benefits of these tools to other teachers. Of course, ICT is not always the best way for learning but of what I have seen in schools and heard from other teachers this has helped to improved teaching. I hope that the rest of the world will get the same oppportunites as soon as possible.
I really liked how she used her body language to describe words, give instructions and help the students to remember words.
The teacher mentioned that the lesson was too short for using a digital tool (45 min). In Sweden, it’s quite the opposite, you use a video or an app, for example, to make the lesson more effective. It is also an effective way to collect data from student and also tests can be self-corrected and summarised instead of teachers spending a lot more hours of work.
Even though I didn’t learn something new about mobile technologies in language learning, it was inspiring for me to see how a professional teacher taught and interacted with the students.

I also noticed how the concentrataion changed after 30 minutes, students looked out through the windows and didn’t raise their hands anymore. Maybe it could be a good idea to change the activity or to USE A DIGITAL TOOL (video) to complement the exercise and catch the attention again.
I really liked how the teacher walked around when they were working and had some small-talk. That, leads to a friendly and open atmosphere instead of having different spaces for each role in the classroom.
